venice restaurants {my top five}

April 6, 2015 by Elizabeth 5 Comments

I can always tell it’s a Biennale year in Venice without looking at the calendar. Every two years, on April 1, I begin to get emails from just about everyone I know in the art world. Many are good friends, some are artists I used to know in New York, and others are simply readers of my blog.

They all run something like this: I’ve read your blog, I’ve downloaded your app, Eat Venice, but still…could you just tell me your top four or five favorite restaurants to eat in Venice? It’s just so hard to sift through it all.

Even though I don’t really believe in ‘best of’ lists (everyone has their personal quirks and needs) for the sake of brevity, and in hopes of streamlining my email correspondence for the next few months, here is my current top five places to eat in Venice. In other words, these are the places I would go, in no particular order. And always subject to change.

  • Antica Carampane
  • Covo
  • Anice Stellato
  • Promessi Sposi
  • Gatto Nero (on Burano)

And here is a short list of very simple, trattorias:

  • Osteria da Alberto
  • La Palanca
  • Trattoria La Rampa
  • Portego
  • Marisa

And if you are at the Biennale, here is my list I wrote up two years ago, of places right in that area.

You’re welcome!

    Going again early next year so thank you. Hope to see you in Rome then too. Will have to get on to booking some things.

    Please USE this list everyone! Venice is a giant tourist rip-off machine, and at the overwhelming number of restaurants that you come across you will be served utter rubbish. Pesto from a jar. Processed “parmesan”. I came across one place offering a “chicken curry pizza”. It’s an insult to people like us who travel to Italy to enjoy fine food. Eating well in Venice is possible, but don’t fall into the trap of going to places that simply look nice. (Hey, everywhere looks nice in Venice….)
