my newest app – eat umbria

July 28, 2015 by Elizabeth 30 Comments

One of the reasons I launched my new app Eat Italy 3 months ago was that it allowed me to offer you new and updated software to support my original trio of apps, Eat Rome, Eat Florence and Eat Venice. But what I was really excited about was the chance to add new cities and regions available as in-app purchases .(you can read all about the apps here) The first new app  was Eat Milan. And before I get to the newest app,  I’d like to thank all of you for being so supportive. EAT ITALY is selling so well that they it is consistently one of the top grossing apps in the Food & Wine category on iTunes.  Thanks to you!!!

Now back to business. Today I’m happy to add EAT UMBRIA to my list of guides. As many of you know I call Rome home. But I also have a villa in Umbria, and have been living, cooking and eating my way around the region for the last 25 years. From my first book on Umbrian ceramics to too-many-to-count articles for magazines and newspapers, I’ve been reporting on food, culture, shopping and travel from this beautiful region.

EAT UMBRIA is a collection of some of my favorite restaurants that I’ve discovered along the way.  I’ve decided to launch this app a bit differently than my others. For now EAT UMBRIA contains about 20 entries. Scattered throughout Umbria, they will come in handy if you are traveling there this summer.

I will be there this summer too, and will be working on the app, to triple  the amount of entries, adding not only more restaurants, but also hotels, markets, food stores and more.

For now, in this first version,  the app costs just 99 cents. And if you buy it in August, you will get full future updates, for free. In September, once I’ve added 40 more entries, the price will go up to $1.99 .  So, if you’re thinking of heading to Umbria, and want to save a dollar, you’d best buy it now. 🙂

And if you are going to Umbria soon, and would like me to explore a specific town or village for you let me know. Or if you’ve been there recently, and have some discoveries to share, I’d love to hear about them.

Also? If you know of a great place to buy stretchy pants, I’m going to be needing those as well. (the things I do for you people)

To buy EAT UMBRIA,  download my app, EAT ITALY. EAT ITALY is a free app, and contains guides to  Venice, Milan, Rome and Florence and now EAT UMBRIA,  available as in-app purchases for both iPhone and iPad. EAT UMBRIA is currently priced at 99 cents. The price will go up to $1.99 in September, but if you buy the app now, you will receive all future updates at no extra cost.

I greatly enjoy reading your email comments about Italy, but am asking you to consider making your apps available for those of us using Android devices. There are actually a lot of Android users in existence – probably more than those using Apple products.

I would love to, but having published my original apps (Eat Rome, Eat Venice and Eat Florence) in android I found that the number of people who actually bought them were next to zero. Unfortunately, for the most part, Android apps are mostly free. Apps which are not free do not do very well. I could never make back the money invested in the software developement.

    L. L. Bean’s ‘Perfect Fit’ Pants are delightfully stretchy. I wore them when I visited Rome earlier this year, and never had an uncomfortable meal!

I guess I’m going to have to buy an iPhone now.

Elizabeth, Thank you for charging forward and enriching Italy for your readers. I just downloaded ‘Eat Umbria’ and wanted to add a slightly off the beaten path to a new “bistrot” in Cortona aptly named ‘bistrot Cortona’. After all, it perches up on v Santa Marguerita and overlooks Lago di Trasimeno. We met the young owners at their dinners via ‘homefood.it which is a wonderful way to meet Italian cooks in their own homes in many different regions of Italy. Their food is superb and these newlyweds are among the sweetest Italians one could ever meet. Enjoy and buon appetito!

Thanks so much for the recommendation! Unfortunately Cortona is, and always has been, in Tuscany. 😉

Sorry to hear you are having problems downloading Eat Rome. Did you buy the new version? Or did you buy it when it was a stand alone app? I’ve re-issued Eat Rome, with new software and updated content. It is now available, in this new version, as an in app purchase through Eat Italy. You will have to purchase this new version to access it. The older version is out of date and no longer active.

The images, which are heavy, download when you have a good connection to wifi. They then stay there. That is pretty standard for apps like this.

    Hello Elizabeth,
Great site! We are leaving for Umbria on Oct. 10th. We’ve been going there almost every year since 2002 usually staying in or around Spoleto. We are huge fans of La Palomba and go every trip, but our meals at Il Bacco Felice were always the highlight of our trips so I know you are a kindred spirit. I’ve been trying to track Salvatore down and was wondering if you know if he is still teaching classes at Caprai? If so, we were going to sign up.

Also, I was trying to download your Eat Umbria app but when I search for it on my iphone only Eat Italy comes up. Any suggestions?
    Thank you,
    Tom

I miss Bacco too! Salvatore is still very much around, but at the moment not teaching at Caprai. Although that could change. You can always contact Caprai to find out. He is often in Rome these days, on Mondays, at the restaurant Bacco al Trastevere, where he consults. To download Eat Umbria, just download Eat Italy (which is free) and then you make an in app purchase for Eat Umbria.
