round and round {san sebastian}

October 10, 2011 by Elizabeth 1 Comment

I was in Spain last week, mostly hiking (thank you Country Walkers), but also eating. I got back late last night and so haven’t had time to shift through all the wonderful things I saw/did/ate. I’ll be reporting on all this in the coming week.

But for now, just a bit of colorful fun to brighten up your Monday. While San Sebastian is probably better known for it’s incredible seaside beauty and it’s over abundance of good food (Besides pintxos, I think it’s got three three-starred Michelin restaurants?) I was loving the more amusing side of the city.

Here are some images of the incredible turn-of-the-century carousel, located on the boardwalk, as well as some of the rides from the kitschy mountain top amusement park that overlooks the town. I LOVED the boats that travel on the edge of the cliff in a meter-wide canal. Who thought that one up?

Carousel Palace
Located right in front of City Hall, on the boardwalk.

Monte Igueldo Amusement Park
The park is located on top of Monte Igueldo. Take the charming old rickety funicular up to the top. Even if you don’t want to ride the ride the wooden roller coaster, it’s worth the trip up for the view.

    Ahh Elizabeth you have found my weakness, I love Carousel’s especially vintage ones like this. One of my favorite photos of my son is when he was one year old riding a carousel in Lucca (his name is Luca). Also fond memories of the one near Montmartre in Paris where we got on and it somehow jammed and we couldn’t get off until we jumped…. ciao lisa
