maurizio cattelan at the guggenheim {nyc}

December 29, 2011 by Elizabeth 1 Comment

We’re in NYC this week and between eating, shopping and running around to museums, there hasn’t been much time to blog. Since I’m sure you’re not interested in my shopping (American essentials such as new bras, jeans and vitamins), and I haven’t had time to get together my act about where and what I’ve eaten, I thought I’d share one of the amazing exhibitions we’ve been to.

These photos were taken at the current show at the Guggenheim: Maurizio Cattelan. The retrospective pulls together almost everything created by the Italian artist since 1989. Hung – en masse – from the center of the circular museum atrium.

If the photos seem confusing, that’s because the show is exhilaratingly so. Huge, massive works of art hang like some big mobile, creating yet another work in and of itself.

We spent about an hour there, and I’m sure we still didn’t get a chance to catch everything. I loved the pigeons inserted here and there. I went with my sister, Robin, who realized that her own work was part of the show. The pyramid of Flash Art magazines are all from the early 80’s, when she was designing ads for my father’s gallery. So her ads – some of the first things she designed as a graphic artists – help provide color to the pyramid. Cool.

The show’s only on until January 22. It obviously won’t be traveling anywhere. And since Catalan (who is not always to be taken at his word) says this is his swan song, you better head over quick.

1071 Fifth Avenue (at 89th St)
The museum, which is usually closed on Tuesday, has extended its hours until the closing of this show.

    Glad to hear that it is as amazing as the hype! And how jealous I am of your bra and jeans shopping–what I wouldn’t give. Ok, just a thought since you have had burgers on the brain lately. The lamb burger with feta at the Breslin is the best I have ever had if you get the hankering! 🙂
