pasticceria barberini {rome}

I’m not sure how a place that serves bite sized portions of tiramisu in edible chocolate cups escaped my attention for so long, but I’d like to apologize for this lapse in reporting. These little bites are from a pastry shop that I’d passed by hundreds of times (it’s a few doors down from  one of my favorite restaurants, Perilli) yet oddly had never gone into.

Last week Gillian and I decided to take a wander through Testaccio. Partly to visit the newly restored piazza where the old market used to be, but also to pop in and out of various places we hadn’t visited in a while. Even though Testaccio is very close to where we live in Monti, it’s not ‘our’ neighborhood. And while Rome is not so big, people tend to stick to their own streets. Testaccio, even though I head there to eat at Flavio and Perilli often, is more my friend Rachel’s territory. (and she is even writing a book about it) and I don’t get there as often as I should.

But back to the pastry shop. Not only did I discover these delicious little tiramisu-filled chocolate cups but they also have mini sacher tortes filled with Nutella. Yup. Austria meets Italy in the form of a curly cue “N” instead of the traditional “S” atop these dark chocolate treats. In theory we had stopped in to have a cream filled Bigne di San Giuseppe, and there were plenty of those, but it was hard to resist the freshly made doughnuts, cornetti and other breakfast pastries. Especially since this place is also a bar and serves excellent coffee.

I won’t go into to the rest of the pastry offerings, but there is one more thing I have to share. You know I have a thing for artichokes and am always looking for new ways to enjoy them. I may have found the cutest artichoke ever. Made of marzipan. Adorable right?

    This place is fantastic! I’ve never had any of their Nutella treats. Must try.

    I really need to stop reading your blog when I’m hungry.

    Oh Elizabeth this is one more temptation in Italy that I will have when visiting later this year. I’m still trying to get rid of the 5lbs I gained on last years trip!

    Elizabeth, thanks for this report on Barberini. Many years ago this was my neighborhood pasticceria and bar. It’s a nice stroll down memory lane – though it’s been considerably dressed up since then!

      It’s too bad they have to always tart things up. I’m sure it was so charming before. But at least the pastries remain the same, or even better.

    Beautiful food. Unfortunate that sugar is not at the top of our food groups in terms of “need”.

    I made your apple strudel this week, and it was better than apple pie and so much easier. I played with the crust a bit too long and chose not to use the parchment paper. Mistake. Lesson learned.
    Thanks for your beautiful blog. I voted ☺️

    Done and dusted…added to my list for our trip in October! I can hardly wait…we are planning to spend an entire day wandering around Testaccio and sitting down for a caffe and treat sounds just about the right thing to do…

    I wish I had shares in the company that sells baking parchment…a true bakers friend…

    Thinking I’ll make a Meyer lemon tart for Easter dinner….or a Meyer lemon budino…cannot make up my mind!
    I’ll be dreaming of those Bigne di San Guiseppe!

    This is exactly the type of place I dream about. I am crazy for pasticcini and wish I had known about this shop when I was last in Rome. One more reason to return!

    Heading for Rome and Florence at the end of April, early May. This will be a stop. Got your apps on the phone. Doubt we’ll starve 😉

    I am bringing my granddaughter to Italy in July (I know, it’s HOT, but it’s the only month she has time between graduation and starting college) . We will be in Rome 4 days, Venice 4 days, Sicily 4 days, Florence 4 days. I am so excited I am having difficulty settling down on what to show her. But this show will be on the top of the list.
