caffe shakerato + video {rome}

caffe shakerato + video www.elizabethminchilliinrome.com
Today is June 11 in Rome. The date is only notable because of the recent weather.  By this time of year I’m usually slathering on sun cream before I leave the house, walking on the shady side of the street and heading to the nearest gelateria most afternoons.

But the recent freakishly cool weather has meant that not only am I still wearing sweaters to keep the chill off, but I have yet to put our comforter in deep storage.

Since we all know the heat will eventually come, us Romans are loath to complain. So the above is not a complaint, ok? It’s simply a weather report.

But I have to admit that the cool weather has at least partly cut down on my gelato consumption. And it’s definitely made a dent in what would usually – by now – be my daily dose of caffe’ shakerato.

I’ve written about the shakerato in the past. And given you the recipe for  making one at home when the heat is just too unbearable to think about venturing out to the local bar in the midday sun.

But the other day I did just that. It was that perfect balance of cool-enough-for-a-walk and hot-enough-for-a-caffe-shakerato-at-the-bar.

Here is a little video of my favorite local barista making a pair of shakeratos for Domenico and me. The first of the season. Which, if summer ever gets started, I’m sure will be plenty long enough.

*Everyone in Monti refers to this as “the Pope’s caffe'” since Pope John Paul II used to go here as a young student studying down the street. Now it’s just the hang out of President of the Republic Giorgio Napoletano

    We fell in love with this drink on our last trip to Rome. Wish I was there to get one now.
